INCI: Citrus paradisi
Grapefruit Essential Oil is obtained by cold pressing the peel of the Citrus paradisi fruit. It is characterised by its fresh, bright, sweet-citrus aroma that provides an uplifting and energising character. It is primarily produced in the West Indies, the United States, and Brazil. Among citrus essential oils, Grapefruit oil is known for having a relatively shorter shelf life due to its high content of naturally volatile constituents, so it should be stored in a tightly sealed container away from heat and light.
Traditionally used in aromatherapy, perfumery, and cosmetic formulations, Grapefruit essential oil is valued for its vibrant and refreshing fragrance. It is a popular ingredient in body care products, soaps, bath products, and massage oils, particularly in blends formulated to improve the appearance of the skin. Its sparkling citrus aroma also makes it an excellent top note in natural perfumes and home fragrance products.
Extraction Method: Cold pressing of the fruit peel.
Origin: West Indies, United States, and Brazil.
Contraindications: As a cold-pressed citrus essential oil, Grapefruit is considered phototoxic. Avoid direct sunlight or UV exposure for 12–24 hours after topical application. Otherwise, it is considered non-toxic when used as directed and properly diluted. As with all essential oils, a patch test is recommended before topical use.
Blends beautifully with Bergamot, Orange, Mandarin, Petitgrain, Clove, Frankincense, Jasmine, Lavender, Rose, and Ylang Ylang essential oils.
